How was war technology changed and impacted society over the years?

How was technology in war evolved from Civil War to World War II to modern and how has this affected society, the economy, and type of warfare?

Railroads were the big innovation in the Civil War and advanced aircraft and transportation were the big ones in World War II (plus the atom bomb). Any details?

I would say that the tactics and mass production that came out of WW2 greatly impacted society. blitzkrieg and strategic bombing made it possible to win wars again (without the trenches). Strategic bombing and inter continental ballistic missiles means that any war between two countries even if they are across the ocean will cost millions of lives. And mass production has definitely impacted society example: you make 5 million AK47's and RPG's and just hand them out to people and you have turned a group of peasants into a huge army with modern weapons overnight.

I think the big difference now is the development of smaller accurate weapons such as smart bombs and missiles to hit the target without a lot of civilians being killed.

During previous wars cities were massively bombed on purpose with large numbers of civilian casualties.

Many technical breakthroughs started out as military projects. example- GPS.

Medical advances in treating sevrely wounded persons.

Aircraft use of military tech. in design, engines, etc.

Smaller, faster, lighter equipment such as computers and parts were first developed for satellites which were a military priority.
